Baker's Dozen!

 Fun with Bagels!!

So I found an awesome recipe for bagels and I have never had a homemade bagel or even thought of making one, the thought seriously intimidated me! Especially since I have never even made bread....but they turned out really well : )
Bagels:

6 2/3- 7 cups of bread flour, plus more for kneading
1 TB salt
1 package rapid rise yeast (or 1 TB fresh yeast)
2 TB sugar
1 TB vegetable oil, plus more for greasing
2 ¼ cups warm water, plus more as needed
2 TB sugar, for poaching the bagels

Combine the flour, salt and yeast in a large bowl. Add the sugar and oil to the water in a separate bowl. Make a well in the dry ingredients and add the liquid, mixing to a dough with a spatula or wooden spoon.
Knead the dough by hand or with a dough hook. You want the dough to be very smooth and elastic, not sticky at all. Knead for about 10 minutes. Form the dough into a ball and put in a greased bowl, flipping once to make sure the dough is coated. Put plastic wrap tightly over the bowl and set aside for about an hour. After an hour punch down the dough, give it a quick kneading, cut it into 3 parts and roll out like rope. after you have rolled out each part cut it into 5 parts  and roll out again....look below. The dough after it has been rolled out and cut!

Alyssa rolling them to make the bagel.

Me, also rolling out a bagel...

Carly provided music, she wasn't interested in this part of the bagel process.
After the dough is rolled out and shaped it should look like this...

After the bagels are shaped you cover them with a thin towel and let them rise for about 20 minutes. While they are rising preheat the oven to 500 degrees, and put a large pot of water on the stove to boil. when the water is boiling add sugar, and proceed to poach the bagels. Drop them in the sugar water for 1 minute then flip once.
Carly was the brave one who poached the bagels because I have a tendency to splash on myself and get some nasty burns...
The bagels after we finished poaching them. Then you put them in the oven for 10-15 minutes.

Voila! the finished product...

Overall we got 16 bagels, fun and easy!!
